Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, the debut album by Outkast, was released in 1994. The album, featuring live instrumentation and elements of funk and soul, addressed coming-of-age themes and urban life in the South. A critical and commercial success, the album helped distinguished Southern hip hop as a credible scene amid East Coast and West Coast dominance at the time. Music journalists regard it as an important release in hip hop and Atlanta’s music scene.
